Diplomaic Relations
The establishment of diploma c rela ons between Thailand and Mongolia took place on March 5, 1974.The Thai Embassy in Beijing was designated to have jurisdic on over Mongolia and an Ambassador was
also appointed to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. For the Mongolian side, in the ini al period, a Mongolian ambassador sta oned in Vien ane was also appointed to hold another role as the Mongolian ambassador
in Thailand. Later, in February 16, 2000, Mongolia opened its resident Embassy in Thailand, with Mr. Luvsandorj Bayart as the first Mongolian Ambassador. The overall rela onship between Thailand and
Mongolia has been conducted smoothly.
Thailand and Mongolia have endeavored to maintain their rela ons as a channel for con nuous dialogue and exchange of views. Thailand places importance on providing assistance in various aspects between the two countries and this commitment has been ongoing to the present day.
Economic Aspect
Trade between Thailand and Mongolia has been consistently expanding. In 2011, Thai-Mongolian trade reached a total value of 18.05 million US dollars, an increase of 30% compared to 2010. This consisted of Thai exports worth 12.73 million US dollars and imports of 5.32 million US dollars, marking a respec ve increase of 32.64% and 26.17% from 2010. From January to September 2013, the total trade value was 12.04 million US dollars, represen ng a 24.96% increase. In 2012, the total trade value was 13.69 million US dollars (Thai exports: 13.23 million US dollars, imports: 0.46 million US dollars). Major Thai exports to Mongolia include autom obiles, components, paper and paper products, aluminum products, refrigerators, freezers and components. Major Thai imports from Mongolia consist of metallic minerals, scrap metals, minerals, mineral products, ready-made garments, tea, coffee and spices.
Thai entrepreneurs are increasingly interested in inves ng in Mongolia. In December 2010, during the official visit of the Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs and Commerce to Mongolia, Thailand and Mongolia jointly organized a seminar and business matching event in Bangkok. Thai businesses showed interest in inves ng in mining, construc on, basic infrastructure and tourism and spa sectors and sin Mongolia. Presently, Banpu Public Company Limited, has invested in coal mining opera ons and established an office in Mongolia since July 2011. However, Mongolian does not have any investment in Thailand as the investment in Thailand is limited due to its small market size, limited market informa on and the absence of direct flights from Mongolia. Nevertheless, Thai private sector companies have begun to show interest in inves ng in the mining industry in Mongolia, as men oned above.
